Modelling in Sydney has become a very mixed genre of work; whilst there is very little high fashion and
catwalk work compared to the New York and Europe offices, there is plenty of low-paying commercial and
editorial work, in which to build a CV, for potential transfer to one of the higher offices, where an actual
career with some earnings is possible. It is very rare to make a lot of money in modelling in Sydney.
it is more about prestige and fame, which is less important in Australia than the rest of the world.
Sydney modeling has also been sadly reduced to a lot of erotic, topless and bikini work, ending up in a
lot of girls calling themselves models, with nothing to offer than a nice body and perhaps a nice face. A model
offers far more, and many of these 'models' we have met have possessed little poise or class, and no talent
for haute couture or commercial work. there is indeed a market for this kind of modelling, but it is not
traditional modelling, and would rarely be represented by a reputable agency.
A model looking for a serious career will steer clear of these types of shoots; swimwear and sexy bikini or lingerie
is one thing, if it is accompanied by some more serious work, to show the range of modelling the person can
perform, but too much 'sexy' work will sadly deem the model as one of 'those', and they will rarely achieve
good representation unless they can show more fashion and commercial style work in their portfolio.
Many girls think being a model is about looking beautiful; modelling is about looking how the client wants you to -
this can be weird, ugly, futuristic sci-fi, beautiful, old, young, natural, tarty, etc etc - it is not about being
beautiful, it is about being a blank canvas for the artist (the designer or client) to build on. Natural fresh face,
fresh healthy hair, slender physique, not too busty - this way, the client can ad whatever curves, colouring,
style or design they want, to create the look they want. A beautiful face with a large bust is often unsuitable,
as it stands out from the crowd - the clothes or the product are supposed to stand out, hence the models.
so in Sydney, finding a girl without big bobs and a natural look can be very difficult! Sydney is fast becoming the
LA of Australia, where good looks and the almighty bikini body reign as the important things, which is a crock, but
that's the way it is becoming. Cosmetic and plastic surgery has soared in recent ears, and very few girls are
'natural' - those who are have more chance of achieving a big modeling career than those who pump up their
breasts and lips, trying to look like a Hollywood slut.. we always recommend our people remain natural, or have
very minimal work done to enhance and preserve that natural look - lips are fine as long as they aren't too big,
or look 'done' - same with noses, liposuction etc - it should look very conservative and natural, not a big change to
look 'done'. We recommend several conservative operations as opposed to one big change.
Laser in Sydney can be beneficial to refine pores and remove unevenness etc, however sometimes freckles and spots
make for a very unique look, so it really depends on the model. Models are recommended to sign with a reputable
company like Crown Models, with a view to being sent to overseas offices, under a mother contract.
If the agency feels you are unsuited to international markets, you can rest assured you will never have a big
modelling career, and can move on to more beneficial circles.
